Economic gloom and doom is all that we seem to be hearing these days, but we have some good news for the consumer. One positive that has surfaced during this financial crisis is that businesses are offering deep discounts on their products as they seek to be more competitive in a tough marketplace. The winner here are the consumers. Walt Disney has for the first time offered free admission on your birthday and deep discounts on lodging packages during peak times. Have no fear, this is not a plug for Disney but rather a true Top 10 on how to get the most for your travel dollar. The answer is not eliminating your vacation but being intentional about your travel plans and even learning some new behaviors, which will net you a positive gain. These are our Top 10 Ways to Get More Bang for your Travel Buck.
1) Travel with another couple or family
By traveling with another couple or family you will benefit from shared gas expenses and an even split on lodging.
2) Rent a Vacation House
By renting a house you will get more bang for your buck and have the opportunity to dine in rather than eating out for all your meals.
3) Midweek Off Peak
The best way to save on your next vacation is to be flexible. Look for off peak times when destinations are willing to offer special rates or consideration for your business. I am not suggesting the Caribbean during Hurricane Season. In Maine most properties will offer special rates, free upgrades or free nights if you stay in early June or October depending on their occupancy. You can also save on your flights by traveling on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
4) Ask for a deal
Don't be afraid the reservationist will not bite; just ask them to give you a better deal. Shop around and then book the place that is best overall value. This means different things to different people. Whether you are spending $1500 a night or $150, we all want to know we are getting the best price. If you don't care then chances are you are missing out..
5) Eat In
Whether you are staying in a suite or a house, one of the best ways to save on your family vacation is to dine in. Perhaps you are staying at a property where meals are included, then consider purchasing your snacks or favorite beverage rather than overpaying at the property's gift shop.
6) Set a budget and stick to it
Not much explanation needed here... How much do you want to spend on dining out, souvenirs and attractions? Set a budget and stick to it.
7) Buy On-line
Hotels will offer better rates on-line than they would typically offer through their reservations department. Be sure to contact the hotel and also check on-line to find your best deal.
8) Pack Smart
Those items forgotten at home can tend to cost the most on vacation. To avoid making a purchase at the hotels gift shop or expensive retailer be sure to make a list of items you will need on vacation and then double check. Items like bug spray, sunscreen, swimsuits, beach towels, batteries and bathroom toiletries are common items left behind.
9) Get the inside scoop
The best way to find some good deals and hidden treasures is to ask several of the hotel staff. Ask them where the locals go to eat and their favorite attractions. Chances are you will find the best cheap eats and attractions. The folks at Newagen recommend the Southport Beach, Bet's Fish Fry or the Boothbay Region Land Trust's many gorgeous preserves for the nature enthusiast.
10) Book now
The time to book your 2009 vacation is now. If you are planning to fly the best deals from airlines are typically 1 - 2 months in advance and on Wednesday. This is the time that airlines refresh their rates. Good luck.
