The ocean and its activities are the big draw in Boothbay Harbor, but there is much the region has to offer that is overlooked. Situated beautifully on Route 27, the Boothbay Playhouse looks more like a quaint New England style home than a theatre company. So it's no suprise that visitors may drive right past one of the region's biggest treasures.
The Playhouse, which offers fully staged productions of Broadway favorites, traces its origins back to 1937 when it was considered New England's best designed summer theatre. In November of 2005, Dean and Susan Domeyer purchased the Playhouse and began renovations to return the space to its original purpose. A new permanent stage was constructed, with wing space and access to both sides of the stage. Tiered seating for the audience improved sightlines, and a new green room and dressing rooms were constructed for the actors. Using both community players and young professionals just starting their careers, the Boothbay Playhouse celebrated its re-opening on June 2, 2006.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is Andrew Lloyd Webber's fresh, innovative, and awe inspiring crowd-favorite! A lively and colorful journey through ancient Egypt, this is the musical parable of a boy blessed with prophetic dreams, who is sold into slavery by his conniving brothers. In true rags to riches fashion, Joseph overcomes these tremendous odds, and dares modern audiences to dream of doing the same. Show dates start June 24.
Beauty and the Beast is family theater at its best. Step into the enchanted world of Broadway's modern classic, Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Based on the Academy Award winning animated movie, the show includes all of the wonderful songs from the film, plus several new songs written especially for the stage. Show dates start July 29.
